Every Friday you have the pleasure of being acquainted with a whole bunch of amazingly talented people. I’ve asked an array of creative souls to answer a handful of questions to give you an insight to their colourful life and to fill you with inspiration for your weekend!
This Creative Friend Friday we get to meet Sarah Birch, a Fashion Designer and Stylist from Liverpool. I’m lucky enough to call this amazing lady friend i.e. have gorgeous custom made threads on tap 😉
I know you as the talented and delightful designer Sarah. How would you describe your work to others and what makes it so creative?
After running my own dress boutique for about 8 years, I decided to make the move to the online. I now work from a studio at the very cool Invisible Wind Factory. Freeing up plenty of time to travel the world looking for amazing fabrics and getting inspired.
How did you get into what you do creatively?
I studied fashion at Leeds College of Art & Design, but didn’t know what I wanted to do, just that I didn’t want to work for anyone else! After I finished uni I got offered a space to rent at the back of a vintage shop in Leeds and decided to open my first dress shop.
In thinking about the things that you have created, is there something that you’ve not been too happy with but the public have loved and purchased?
When I had a boutique, there was more pressure to sell more and please the customers that came in. So if people asked for a particular style a lot, even if I didn’t like it, id end up making loads of them. That’s the nice thing about not having to fill a shop, I can make small collections of garments that I actually love and would wear myself instead of what’s fashionable.
Do you do anything special to get your “creative juices” flowing?
Buy fabric. I cant really imagine a dress until I see how the fabric feels/looks.
Going on holiday always gets me inspired, especially if its somewhere with gorgeous fabrics like India! But I get inspired by just being in a different country and relaxing, then I start drawing loads of ideas and cant wait to get back to make them!
What inspires you to be creative?
Gorgeous fabrics….i always buy the fabric first then decide what to make out of it later.
What do you do in a normal day that contributes to your creative work? Give us a little peek into your daily life…
Wake up early ish…..about 7.30/8am. And try to get to the studio for 9 but I love a little faff in the morning so usually to the studio by 10! Get myself a cup of tea, put my music on and start making orders. I stay till about 4.30 before I have to leave for the post office to post out my orders. Then its either home to put my feet up, or yoga or the gym!
Any exciting projects or collaborations you’d like to share with us?
Currently working on my Spring/Summer collection which were shooting on April 22nd so keep your eyes peeled on Instagram for the launch!
