(Almost!) Every Friday you have the pleasure of being acquainted with a whole bunch of amazingly talented people. I’ve asked an array of creative souls to answer a handful of questions to give you an insight to their colourful life and to fill you with inspiration for your weekend!
This Creative Friend Friday we get to meet Ruth Weldon, the planner with pizzazz for weddings and events and founder of Ruth Alexander Weddings.
Your job looks so glamorous! The sunshine, the sceneries, I love the photos of the finished products! How do you strive to be unique in your creative endeavours?
Ibiza certainly is an amazing location to work in. I love finding hidden venues on the Island and amazing local suppliers that you can guarantee no one will know – that’s what keeps RA weddings bespoke, we ensure that every wedding is different in its creativity, it keeps it fresh and every client is guaranteed a unique wedding experience.
How did you get into what you do creatively? Do you feel that you chose your “passion,” or did it chose you?
Ah I would say I definitely chose my passion, I knew from an early age I wanted to produce creative, high end weddings and events and that’s exactly what I did. I was fortunate to work with the best mentors and high net worth clients to gain my experience until I could venture out and create my own vision with RA. Being free with big budgets helps the vision for sure.
Could you describe a typical day in the life of Ruth at work or is everyday completely different?
Wow, this is a hard one! In Ibiza, it would be a mix of client meetings and site visits to beautiful villas and boutique hotels to having coffee with new and exciting suppliers.
On the wedding days it would consist of being with the clients family and friends and ensuring they have the best experience from start to finish. We have presence at every wedding we produce so we are there until the last guest leaves; usually they leave with drunken smiles on their faces 🙂
I’m sure it would be very difficult to name a favourite wedding or event so instead I’ll ask you what your favourite accomplishment is to date?
Yes, I don’t think I could name one wedding that was my favourite, they are all pretty special! I would say my most favourite accomplishment was producing my first wedding in Ibiza, it was such an amazing moment and knowing that the dream of setting up a lifestyle business on an Island that I love so much was happening. I love being able to base myself in London and Ibiza and visit most weeks over the summer months.
What’s the most breathtaking venue that you’ve been asked to work at?
There are so many – for me you can’t beat the beautiful villa’s – we have had the privilege of working with the best on the Island, creating the most beautiful weddings.
We recently produced a wedding in my favourite restaurant Cicale, being able to do that was pretty special as I go there with friends every time I’m on the Island so transforming the beautiful rustic Italian restaurant was pretty magical.
….and the most unusual or challenging work space?
I once had an Ice Piano built for a client, so a whole Piano to spec built from carved Ice blocks– it was a super expensive luxury and we had our Pianists keyboard fitted into the ice so she could play from it too – it looked pretty amazing.
Who or what has helped you to persevere and not quit?
I’m lucky to have my business on the most beautiful Island, which holds so many personal memories for me, that definitely is a strong contender to keep going. Quitting is not part of my makeup so that would never be an option for me 😉 working in the sunshine definitely helps….
What inspires you to be creative?
I’m constantly on blogging websites, and looking for the next best thing – I love everything floral so I tend to visit flower markets to get the best foliage and floral that arrives super early in the morning.
The amazing restaurants in Ibiza are always an inspiration as they can be so beautifully designed so I often pick up new creative visions from just being out with friends, the rustic and authentic the better.
If you could interview a creative person (past or present), who would that person be?
There are so many! I love Alexander McQueen and everything him and his brand represents, he would be the person that would interest me most creatively.
I would also love to interview Preston Bailey too, a florist and wedding designer from New York – he produces the most extravagant floral designs so I would love to know where he gets his inspiration.
Can you divulge any up and coming fabulous and exciting projects that you have coming up in your diary soon?
We have loads happening for the rest of the wedding season in Ibiza and next year too, lots of gorgeous weddings at various cool locations around Ibiza, super excited for RA to keep growing in Ibiza and producing beautiful weddings for our clients, I feel lucky to be able to do something I love everyday.
